Box office | “Beekeeper” surpasses “Mean Girls” in the US

The thriller “Beekeeper,” starring Jason Statham, and the musical “Mean Girls” are at the center of a fierce box office battle this weekend. The action film grossed approximately $7.4 million in 3,337 theaters, while the musical remake, which played in 3,544 theaters, reached $7.3 million. The definition of the weekend leader will be confirmed on Monday, when the accounts will be closed.

If Statham’s film prevails, it will be the first time it has surpassed “Mean Girls” at the top of the domestic box office. To date, the comedy has grossed $60.8 million domestically and $83.4 million worldwide, while “Beekeeper” has already crossed the $100 million mark globally, but has earned a lot less so in its domestic market, where it grossed just $42.3 million.

This period marks the second consecutive weekend without major studio releases, resulting in an overall box office decline. The expectation is that the most significant recovery in box office receipts will occur only in March, with the premiere of “Duna: Part Two”.

Other films that stood out over the weekend included other films that remained in the Top 5 for a long time: “Wonka,” “Ducks!” and “Everybody But You,” rounding out the top five at the box office. “Wonka” remained in the North American Top 3 for seven consecutive weeks, a testament to its enduring popularity but also the paucity of new entrants.
