Focus Features has released a new poster and first trailer for “Back to Black,” the Amy Winehouse biopic. The preview features actress Marisa Abela (of the “Industry” series) as the British singer, in scenes from the beginning and peak of her career.
Considered one of the greatest artists in history, Amy Winehouse has sold more than 30 million records worldwide and currently generates more than 80 million streams per month. Her album “Back to Black” (2006), from which the film is named, catapulted her to stardom, earning her five Grammys.
The film will focus on Amy’s genius, creativity and fragility. The plot traces the singer’s life from the small stages of London in the 90s to her global success, with hits such as “Rehab” and “Back to Black”, passing through her great disappointment in love and her fatal addiction to alcohol and drugs , which led her to die alone in her home, at the age of 27, on July 23, 2011.
The screenplay was written by Matt Greenhalgh and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who had previously worked together on another musical biopic, “The Boy from Liverpool” (2009), about John Lennon’s youth.
It premieres in Brazil on May 9, two weeks after the UK launch and a week earlier in the US.
