HBO’s The Wire cast members pick the show’s best season, and it stays the same

Fans of most TV shows, especially those who build a multi-season narrative, love to argue about which episode or even which season of the show is considered “best”. We have tried, over the years, to enumerate the best breaking Bad Episodes for example, and we also highlighted what we thought it was the best episode of The Sopranos . But when it comes to David Simon Wire, the conversation may be too difficult. The HBO drama ran for five seasons and practically every season was perfect (in his way). But if you ask cast members of The Wire which season they thought was best, they all tend to give the same answer.

Gossipify had a chance to sit down with the cast and crew of Wire while the HBO masterpiece celebrated its 20th anniversary. The show is now available on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as ready for streaming on HBO Max . And in the course of the conversation, I raised the fact that Wire it never won the Emmy Award for Best Series, despite being considered one of the best television shows ever made. So, giving the cast a chance to review the story, I asked them which season they should have won, and Dominic West kicked off the conversation by saying that he loved season 4, explaining:

Because it’s about children, it’s much more dramatic and emotional, and the stakes are much higher. And why the actors who played these children were so brilliant. And also, because I don’t like it. (laughs) I think season 4 was the highlight, it was perfection. It was supposed to be a book that David (Simon) convinced Ed (Burns) not to write, so it was also that writer’s perfect bedroom wedding.

every season of Wire took a macro view of the drug war in Baltimore, but also found a way to dig deeper into a specific region or territory. Season 2 infamously explored the ports of Baltimore and season 3 established a fictional safe zone for drug trafficking known as Hamsterdam. In season four, the show focused on the city’s public school system and the effects of drugs on school-age children. This impact influenced actor Jamie Hector, who played legendary mobster Marlo Stanfield on the show. Hector also picked season 4 as the best, telling Gossipify:

I am very fond of early childhood education, so (the show) sheds light on the disparity between some communities that are well educated or not. Having a child in a private school or not having a child in a private school, and seeing the difference in the education and passion of teachers and professors, and the resources that each should have. So if you could zoom in on this season, that would be great.

The sentiment is echoed by the brilliant Andre Royo, who played injured drug addict Bubbles on the show, also saying that season 4 deserves praise when he said:

When the fourth season hit, it became a social show about the middle class and school systems. And then someone from every race said, ‘It’s 10 am. Do you know where your kids are? Whatever your race, care about your children. And this show has taken us to a different level if you will.

There are so many wonderful reasons to celebrate why The Wire is special, from the enduring performance of Michael K. Williams like Omar Little at the signature line he left for Isiah Whitlock Jr. And yes, we also tried archiving Wire the best episodes of , so feel free to discuss these options with us. In the meantime, take a look our full interviews with the cast and dive in Wire if you haven’t already.
