Super Bowl weekend, considered the biggest television event of the year in the United States, is usually a slow time for cinema, and this Sunday’s (11/2) clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will not was an exception. According to Comscore, ticket sales are virtually stagnant, totaling about $42 million, the lowest total on record for the weekend coinciding with the big game. By comparison, revenues in 2023 managed to reach $51 million, while the pre-pandemic years of 2020 and 2019 generated $84 million and $75 million, respectively.
With an uncrowded box office, the action comedy “Argylle” remained in first place for a second weekend in the United States, surpassing the release of “Lisa Frankenstein.” Both attracted only a lack of public interest.
Poor performance
“Argylle” grossed $6.5 million from 3,605 locations in North America, a sharp 62% drop from its already disappointing debut. After two weeks of screening, Apple’s big investment has grossed $28.8 million at the North American box office and a dismal global total of $60 million. With a production cost of $200 million (excluding P&A expenses), the film marks the first major disappointment of the year.
The horror comedy “Lisa Frankenstein” debuted in second place with just $3.8 million from 3,144 locations — a terrible start for any wide-release film. However, Focus Features only spent $13 million on filming, which keeps the land from getting creepy. The film is not scheduled for release in many international markets, including Brazil, which could indicate greater savings in P&A (advertising and publicity) and a bet on VOD (digital rental) to recoup the investment.
A tribute to Tim Burton’s films of the 1980s, “Lisa Frankenstein” was written by Diablo Cody (Oscar winner for “Juno”) and marks the directorial debut of Zelda Williams, daughter of the late actor Robin Williams (“Jumanji”) . Actress Kathryn Newton, who played Ant-Man’s daughter in the hero’s most recent film (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”) plays Lisa with a look that combines the looks of Madonna and Winona Ryder over the years ’80. she is a gothic teenager from 1989 who has a crush on a young man who died in the previous century. Cole Sprouse, Jughead from “Riverdale”, brings the handsome corpse back to life, and it comes back to life in an unexpected way.
The rest of the Top 5
Facing a complete lack of competition at the box office, action thriller “Beekeeper,” starring Jason Statham, remained in the Top 3 for the fifth consecutive weekend, while “Wonka,” starring Timothee Chalamet, remained in the Top 4 for the ninth consecutive weekend.
“Beekeeper” came in at No. 3 with $3.46 million, bringing its North American total to $54.7 million, as well as achieving a respectable global haul of $133.8 million. In fourth place, “Wonka” added $3.1 million, reaching $205 million in the U.S. and Canada. The $125 million Warner Bros. film has already grossed $587 million worldwide and has become a financial success thanks to its impressive stay, week after week, among the most watched of 2024.
Universal and Illumination’s animated comedy “Ducks!” rounded out the Top 5 with $3.02 million. After eight weeks of airing, the cartoon has grossed $110 million in North America and $235 million globally. It cost $70 million and is also making a profit.
