In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone Brasil, Dave Mustaine also revealed fear of faction kidnapping at his first performance in Rio de Janeiro

In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone Brazil, Dave Mustainevocalist of Megadeth, delved into the memories of a lasting musical relationship between the band and Brazil; With the band’s 16th show in the country scheduled for April, Mustaine shared a mix of vibrant memories and dark moments on his first visit, at Rock in Rio IIin 1991.

Mustaine, when asked about memories in the country, revealed: “I could tell you that I have memories of every concert, but I would be dishonest.” However, he highlighted the debut in Brazil: “I remember how big it was and how well it went, but I also remember that two people died at that show”, added the vocalist.

On this occasion, the show took place at the stadium of Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro, causing concerns among members even before they landed in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. According to the group’s leader, news about the country initially kept him away from sightseeing.

“It was our first time in Brazil and we were excited to go to the beach, but I also remember reading about some factions that were kidnapping people and taking their organs. So we heard all kinds of things before we went there,” Mustaine recalled.

Brazilian affection

“I did it by learning the martial arts [brasileiras]. I did this by hiring a Brazilian guitarist. I did this by going to Brazil, more than many other metal bands. Maybe we are one of the best known bands there!”, he concluded.

Finally, he emphasized his commitment to this day in putting Brazil on the trail of the band’s world tours, as he did on the most recent one, promoting the album The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead! at the Unimed Space on April 18th.
