The best choice was the second one
The film Anatomy of a fall by Justine Triet, Palme d’Or 2023, nominated five times at the 2024 Oscars and favorite at the 2024 Césars, has left an indelible mark on contemporary culture. A remarkable performance for a French film which, at the time of its release, had a very talented but not well-known cast to host the trial of a woman accused of the murder of her partner.
But since its release, Swann Arlaud has become a sex symbol, the dog Messi the animal mascot of world cinema, Sandra Hüller an international star, Justine Triet a prestigious director…

It’s that Justine Triet, to reach her perfection Anatomy of a fallaligned the good choices. And perhaps he could also count on his good fortune, given that some of his good choices were made by default. This is what happened with the famous music of the film, the one that Samuel plays at full volume in his speakers and which triggers all the drama of the story: the piece “Pimp” From 50 centstaken over by the German group Ritmo Bacao and steel strap.

Anatomy of a Fall: Did Sandra Voyter Kill Samuel Maleski?
“I was devastated”
If today this piece stands out as evident in the images ofAnatomy of a fallit was not not the first choice by Justine Triet, who wrote Anatomy of a fall with completely different music. In fact, as he said Slatewanted to use the song”Jolene” by Dolly Parton, a ballad and an American country classic, a melancholy prayer from one woman to another not to “steal” her husband. Something very far from the cartoon gangsta rap of 50 Cent.
It had to be “Jolene”. But a month before we started filming, they said, “No, we don’t want to sell the rights to this song.” I was devastated then, really devastated, because during the trial there was a whole analysis of the song. I thought “oh no, I have to take all the explanations out of the lyrics”.
So 50 Cent, I think I’ve had this song on my computer for three years. And it was the most played song on my playlist. It’s interesting because it’s not too trendy. Is very strange. If I had chosen the original 50 Cent version, it would have already been too expensive for us. And that would have been too much. Too significant, too heavy. (…) So yes, it was a second choice, but I’m happy with this choice.
Since we don’t hear any other music, except when Daniel plays the piano, inside Anatomy of a fall, “PIMP” plays a crucial role, and therefore it is anything but a detail. It is therefore intriguing to imagine what the film would have given with the song “Jolene”, and therefore with all of them a sequence of the trial dedicated to his words – in the film only a few concise lines of dialogue between the lawyers concern the song “PIMP”.
