Director Sam Mendes announces four-film project about the Beatles

Director Sam Mendes (“007 – Operation Skyfall”) announced this Tuesday (20/2) the biggest project of his career: four separate films about each member of the Beatles. The project is produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and the director’s production company, Neal Street Productions, and marks the first time that Apple Corps Ltd. and the Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have granted the rights to complete life stories and music from each of the artists to be used in the films.

Mendes will direct all four films, telling interconnected stories, each from the point of view of a different band member. Sony will finance and distribute the films worldwide starting in 2027.

A project welcomed with enthusiasm

When Mendes presented the project to Hollywood, the Beatles and their families were immediately enthusiastic. “This project was born from an idea Sam had over a year ago, and it’s a testament to his creative brilliance and persuasiveness that Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon and Olivia Harrison responded with so much warmth and enthusiasm as soon as we spoke to them,” Mendes’ partner, Pippa Harris, said in a statement. “We want this to be an epic and moving cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives, telling a single story about the most famous band of all time,” she added.

“I know I speak for everyone at Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group around the world when I say, ‘yes, yes, yes!’ Today’s cinematic events must be culturally seismic. Sam’s bold, large-scale vision is this and more. Combining his world-class film crew with the music and stories of the four young people who changed the world will shake audiences around the world. Deeply grateful to all parties and looking forward to breaking some rules with Sam’s unique artistic vision,” said Sam Rothman, president and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.
