Adele is sued for plagiarism on Brazilian music


One of the most popular names in world music, Adele was reported for plagiarizing a Brazilian song. In the case, which began examination by the Court of Justice of Rio de Janeiro (TJRJ) this week, Brazilian artist Toninho Geraes accuses the English singer of plagiarizing his song “Mulheres”, which was a huge hit in Brazil with the voice of Martinho da Vila.

Details of the accusation

According to a publication in the newspaper O Globo, Toninho Geraes claims that Adele copied the characteristics of “Mulheres”, composed in 1995, in the hit “Million Years Ago”, present in the album “25”, released by the singer in 2015. The trial it started this week, but it’s nothing new. In September 2021, the artist spoke to Veja about the process: “I was shocked when I made it. The melody and harmony are the same. It’s an obvious copy.”

Process requirements

In the trial, Toninho Geraes requests the payment of compensation of R$ 200,000 for moral damages and the inclusion of his name among the authors of the song “Million Years Ago”. Furthermore, the Brazilian artist requests that Adele’s hit be removed from streaming platforms and that the singer be prevented from singing the song in her shows.
