There are several important aspects that a director must consider when creating a basketball movie. It must have a compelling story, layered characters, and of course effective basketball sequences. Over the years, filmmakers have used different methods to film such scenes, and as a result, viewers have been treated with unique styles. Through his work on Increase (accessible with a Disney + subscription ), the director Akin Omotoso has managed to enrich this great tradition by skillfully recreating the theatrical performances in the field of Giannis and Thanasis Antetokounmpo. And believe it or not, the film’s techniques were actually influenced by a Ben Affleck film.
Akin Omotoso is a self-proclaimed sports fan, who has a great deal of respect for basketball. So when it came to Increase, he thought a lot about how he wanted to film sports scenes. And he had talented co-workers to help him in that department. When I spoke to him at Disney + Movie Night, Omotoso praised his basketball coordinator, Aimee McDaniel. The film industry veteran brought a lot of experience to the table, including her work in Ben Affleck’s film. The way backwho set the tone for how this latest production would be handled:
Aimee [McDaniel] He was one of the first people we hired because he worked on The Way Back, and we loved what he did on The Way Back, and he did a lot of things. But there was something about The Way Back about this basketball shooting reality that we loved. And then also as a basketball fan, so I had ideas in my head like, “Oh, that would be great to try that shot on that.” So really she and her team, they, according to the story and the dramatic rhythms, we were just going back and forth to do the choreography well.
2020 The way back to go Ben Affleck plays an alcoholic construction worker. who apparently finds an opportunity to redeem himself once he becomes a basketball coach in his old high school, where he was a sports phenomenon. The R-rated movie presented a sweet story and presented strong scenes that took place in hardwood, despite its director he doesn’t really see it as a sports movie . Akin Omotoso and his team had the wisdom to bring Aimee [McDaniel] in his film, and his efforts show through in the finished product.
Although the Nigerian director wanted to inject a level of realism into Antetokounmpos sports biopic , sometimes I also wanted to make room for a bit of cinematic magic. She then explained during our chat that his goal was to make Rise both “realistic” and “cinematic”:
I really wanted to hear yes, you’re watching basketball, but it’s also a movie. So I also felt that you had to use the cinema… Don’t be afraid to enter the “not real”. You know what I mean ? Because you know, it’s a movie. So, at the same time, you just want to say, ‘Hey, look, it’s a movie too. So cinema allows us to do certain things. And I wasn’t afraid to push those limits, when I was like, ‘Look, in a real game, this move is probably not realistic. But in a film it is realistic.
When it comes to movies like these, we want to be as authentic as possible, there are definitely times when extraordinary things happen purely for entertainment purposes. I mean, you can’t look further Happy Gilmore or some of Rocky movies to find scenes that aren’t quite feasible. However, that doesn’t take away (or shouldn’t) take away from the enjoyment of these films.
Now that Akin Omotoso has wet his feet IncreaseI could definitely see him making another basketball movie at some point. And if he does, I hope he continues to use the talent of people like Aimee McDaniel, who can help him draw the cinematic line between what’s real and what’s not.
Increase forward now (opens in a new tab) among some of best movies on Disney + . Be sure to check out the Gossipify schedule on upcoming movie releases to see what happens this year.
