Originally composed for the soundtrack to “The Idol,” an HBO miniseries created by The Weeknd, “Popular” has a surprising trajectory. “The Idol” didn’t catch on and the series’ soundtrack wasn’t even officially released, despite playlists of it existing on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
“Popular” was written by The Weeknd with rapper Playboy Carti, another successful production team. The invitation to Madonna to participate was made, according to the Canadian singer of Ethiopian origin, because she is “the pop star par excellence”.
