Karen Jonz reveals inspirations for Papel de Carta, first solo album [ENTREVISTA]

From Nirvana to Xuxa, the first record by athlete and skater Karen Jonz is full of references from the 1990s

From skateboarding to the stage. Karen Jonz he did not abandon the sport, but took advantage of the break in the championships to dedicate himself to another passion: music. Athlete – and also a singer – has just released her first solo album, Writing paper(2022), which hit digital platforms on May 12.

With an alternative rock vibe that mixes bedroom pop and lo-fi, it features ten original tracks. About the style of music, jonz stated that he always liked rock, but also wanted to bring other references to the album. “In my head, I’ve always been rock. That rock girl, who is emo, even when I didn’t call her emo. But when we went to release this record, it ended up having a little more influence from something more electronic,” she explained.

Before going solo, the singer participated in two bands with her husband. Lucas Silveiraa Vaconaut and the Apple Monster with a pop punk vibe and Kyber Krystals which has an alternative pop bias. Silveira continues to produce the songs of jonztherefore, she stated that she did not feel such a big change in her work routine, because it was the same team.

Despite this, he compared the experiences, explaining how before “it was much more in the game.” “It was more spontaneous, like ‘I made a little song here, check it out, let’s record it? We will.’ And they put it there, you know? No, now it’s a record, there’s work, there’s going to be a show. It’s a focus. The focus is different,” she said.

As for references, jonz wanted to bring everything I liked into the album: “All the songs have a lot of voice layer, so I think they have a lot of influence from bands from the 1990s that I liked a lot, like Nirvanain Sonic Youthin Alanis [Morissette] also. […] A bit of My Chemical RomanceRolling StonesNo Doubt…”

National artists were also not left out, as the singer revealed that she was inspired by the aesthetics of Xuxa at the time of “Crystal Moon” to do Writing paper. “That spacey, futuristic kind of thing,” she explained. While the lyrics translate personal experiences about relationships and other issues that marked her life.

jonz explains that he did not want to release singles before the album, as he believes that Writing paper must be heard from beginning to end, at once, because the tracks intertwine and only then is it possible to have a complete experience, to know the story as a whole.

Despite embarking on a musical career, he guarantees that he will not leave skateboarding aside. According to the athlete, music and sport have always walked side by side, since since she was a child she had contact with both universes and always knew how to reconcile the two passions.
