If you think Gran Turismo is going to be just another movie based on a video game, you can apologize. After all, it’s named after a video game – PlayStation’s long-running popular racing title – and counts PlayStation Productions among its credits. But unlike Tomb Raider, Uncharted and The Last Of Us, Gran Turismo isn’t adapting a story or characters – two things games don’t have. Instead, it tells the fact-based story of Jann Mardenborough, the young Brit whose impressive Gran Turismo skills led him to become a real-life professional driver.
Rather than being an action-adventure film set in a video game world, Gran Turismo is set in our world – with director Neill Blomkamp and screenwriters Zach Baylin and Jason Hall taking inspiration from classic sports films and underdog stories. “We talked about how this story could have elements of Rocky, being about a character on the fringes of an industry, who has a real desire to not just get into a specific sport, but to prove something to himself and his family,” Baylin tells Empire. “We talk a lot about the original Top Gun and that idea of a character surrounded by the best of the best, coming to learn what it means to pilot these extremely fast vehicles. What it means to be part of a team. Which means overcoming your own insecurities and ego to fly something that could kill you and others.”
The stakes, then, are high. “It’s the story of basically a real-world superhero,” says Archie Madekwe, who plays Mardenborough. He also got a crash course in racing. “Two years ago, that wasn’t me. Racing wasn’t my world. I didn’t care about cars. But that’s the thing about Jann – you don’t have to be a car fanatic to be inspired by what he accomplished.” Finally – a hope that all those hours we spent playing Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom might lead to a real career fighting Bokoblins.
