This week, the Netflix had to deal with enormous controversy after the release of the film “Annapoorani – The Goddess of Food“. Available only on platforms outside of Brazilthe film became the target of criticism from the largest religious group in the world India. However, the streaming service had to act quickly, as the country is one of the biggest consumers of content released by the company.
It all started with a scene from the movie “Annapoorani – The Goddess of Food“. In it, the daughter of a Hindu priest ate meat, something that is not common in the tradition of the Indian people. Thus, most of the time, Hindu priests and their families are vegetarians. In this way, the Netflix was accused of disrespecting local culture. Therefore, the platform decided to remove the work from the catalog last Thursday (11).
The film “Annapoorani” showed the daughter of the priest of a Hindu temple in State of Tamil Nadusouth of India, eating meat. To make things even worse, she entered a cooking contest, in which she cooked meat. As a result, protesters from Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a hard-line Hindu organization, organized a protest in front of the Netflix in the country.
