On the eve of the show Baby, te amo – Tributo a Gal Costa at Blue Note SP, Assucena revealed how the late singer’s work helped her regain her passion for music after leaving the trio As Baías
Assucena recalled the trio’s departure The Bays and the fresh start on stage. On the eve of the show Baby, I Love You – A Tribute to Gal Costawhich presents on the 20th at Blue Note SP by the project Rolling Stone Sessionsthe singer opened up about her desires and difficulties in restarting her solo career and with her acclaimed tribute to Gal Costa: “I’m even emotional because it was a difficult process.”
“I went back to Bahia and stayed there for three months when I decided to start over with this tribute. I thought: ‘I’m at my origins, I’m going to have to go back to my origins, this is where I have to leave’. I didn’t know if I could do it one more show alone.”
Assucena, who gained some recognition alongside Raquel Virginia It is Rafael Acerbi in the trio Bahias and Minas Gerais Cuisine – later As Baías -, found itself faced with a challenge when the group, nominated for the Latin Grammy in 2019 and 2020, it disbanded at the end of 2021. For her, it was a time to get in touch with her insecurities and understand whether her relationship in music would continue from then on:

“I did a show for years with the band and accompanied by another singer. I didn’t know if I could hold an audience. So all those insecurities affected me: do I know how to make a record? Can I hold an audience? Will it be cool? Will I get emotional again?”
In the process of reconnecting with music, Assucena rediscovered the work of Gal Costa. Contact with Gal – who was never far from working with As Baías – ends up being the necessary kick to the tribute I laugh and I can also cry – Fatal 50released at the end of 2021 in celebration of the album’s 50th anniversary Fa-tal — Gal at Full Vapor (1971):
“The process of making I laugh and I can also cry It was also very important, because I was reunited with a first state, almost a primitive state, of an Assucena that was in a transition phase. Twelve years ago. So this Assucena who had already given up on music – and it was with this album that I decided to return to music. When I look at Fa-Tal and say ‘wow, does that exist in Brazilian music?'”
Live recording recorded in 1971 and directed by Waly Solomon, Fa-Tal – Gal at Full Vapor was considered a milestone in Gal’s career and was chosen as the 20th best album in Brazilian music in the list published in 2007 by Rolling Stone Brazil. In the recording, the imperfections and noises were maintained, which, according to Assucena, would have been part of what attracted her to the work of the Bahian idol, who would end up passing away in November 2022.
“What strikes me about Fatal? All the aesthetic dirt, the feedback, the repertoire choices, the melancholy of the record, and a Latin American artist exposing her wounds, singing from a bossanovista moment to a rock’n’roll moment in a moment that the technical apparatus of the industry The Brazilian singer didn’t have the power to capture that show, with the guitar, with everything… the last songs are almost inaudible because they are so high pitched.”
