US passes law that could ban the TikTok app from the country

Last Wednesday (13), the Chamber of Deputies of the USA passed a law that could ban TikTok in the country. Thus, the project orders that the application, controlled by the Chinese company ByteDance, be led by a new owner. If this does not happen, the social network will be deleted from American territory. It is worth noting that the idea received broad support from Democrats and Republicans.

The bill was approved by 352 votes to 65. But the result does not mean an immediate ban on TikTok. This is because the law still needs to pass Senate and also depends on sanction from the president of the USA, Joe Biden. Last week, he indicated he would sign the decision. Despite being focused on the Chinese app, the proposed legislation affects “applications controlled by foreign adversaries“.

“We hope they see the impact on the economy, the 7 million small businesses, and the 170 million Americans who use our service“, said a spokesperson for TikTok after the result. In a video released after approval, the executive president of the social network, Shou Chewsaid that he has invested in “keep your data safe and the platform free from external manipulation“.

This week, the government of China made an important decision and intensified the desire to “expel” any technology from U.S from the country. Thus, according to information from The Wall Street Journal, the initiative was named “Delete America”. The attitude is part of the intense dispute between Chinese and North Americans for global hegemony in the sector.

In recent days, the Prime Minister of China, Li Qiang, reported that the country is ready to increase spending on science and technology by 10%. In this way, the values ​​would reach around US$51 billion (R$254 billion) this year, above the 2% increase recorded in 2023. With this in mind, the government’s order is that all state-owned companies replace foreign software by 2027 .

The aim is to end any foreign dependence and boost Chinese domestic industry. It is worth highlighting that the decision of the government of China came to light after the White House announced the first bans on exports of semiconductor chips and other products to Chinese territory. At the moment, the Chinese spend US$6.6 trillion (almost R$33 trillion) on the state sector.
