O Garbage is preparing to release its first album in three years. “I was really delighted that No Gods No Masters was received so well, because we had no expectations,” he said. Shirley Manson about the 2021 album in an interview with NME.

“Going into this next album, I feel a change. I’m trying to reduce my outrage. As a society, we are very dejected and heartbroken. I’m trying to achieve something that’s a little bigger than me, because if I don’t, I’ll drown in my own discouragement.”

The vocalist explained that the discouragement was associated with the hip surgery she underwent after falling off the stage in 2016, which left her in “unbearable pain”. “I also lost my dog, which doesn’t seem like much, but it literally ruined my life,” she continued.

“Her loss influenced everything. Having a body that didn’t work, losing the joy in my life, it’s been a real challenge trying to recover and not be destructive with my depression and my anger. They always need to be alleviated.”

I have managed to go through this struggle and get to know the world, which is demonic. Everything I see on social media seems demonic. We all struggle with this daily and it is poisoning everything. We all need to fight to keep our hearts from turning to ice.

Manson characterized the new album by Garbage, which should be ready by the end of May, like “a searchlight” and added: “After burning the earth, we are emerging from a filthy cave with a searchlight. We look for fragments of life and humanity.”

“It’s amazing! We’re the little engine that could, but no one ever thought we would. No one bet on us. In some ways, we’re the classic underdog. Our public success came a long, long time ago — and we’ve been operating with a status of underdog.”
