Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sing and excite the audience in the full trailer for ‘Wicked’; clock

The film tells the origin of the rivalry between the Wicked Witch of the West and the Wizard of Oz, but its presentation does not take on a musical character

Universal Pictures has released a new poster and full trailer for “Evil”, adaptation of the famous Broadway musical inspired by the universe of “The Wizard of Oz”. The film stars the actress Cynthia Erivo and the singer Ariana Grande, respectively in the roles of the witches Elphaba and Glinda.

“Evil” tells the story of “The Wizard of Oz” from the point of view of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who ends up proving to be less cruel than the fame boasted by her diabolical nickname. The preview shows how Elphaba is bullied for being green, even by her college roommate, Glinda. However, after many evil acts, the Good Witch begins to see the suffering of the one who will be known as the Wicked Witch, and she decides to become her true friend.

There are also scenes full of visual effects to materialize the city of Oz, in addition to the meeting between the protagonists and the Wizard, played by Jeff Goldblum (“Jurassic World: Dominion”), and the beginning of his rivalry with Elphaba. You can still hear some music in the background, but the preview doesn’t show any musical numbers, following the current trend of movie studios hiding that their musicals are… musicals.

Adaptation team

Running since 2003, the Broadway musical is based on the book “Villain: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, by Gregory Maguire, a sort of prelude to “The Wizard of Oz”. The plot references the classic 1939 film and features events that take place before and after Dorothy’s arrival in Oz, proving that every story has different points of view and that being different is what makes each person unique.

The film’s production is directed by Jon M. Chu, who is filming his second musical, after signing “In a Neighborhood of New York” (2021).

Screenwriter Winnie Holsman (creator of the cult series “My So-Called Life”) and composer Stephen Schwartz, author of the music for the stage show, wrote the screenplay and the musical adaptation, and the cast also includes Michelle Yeoh (” Tudo em Do the place at the same time”) and Jonathan Bailey (“Bridgerton”).

The film will be released in two parts, the first will arrive in Brazilian cinemas on November 28, one day after its release in the United States.
