L’Orville: new horizons got off to a shocking start, as Isaac decided to end his life following the crew backlash relating to Kaylon’s ongoing war. Much of that hatred came from new ensign Charly Burke, played by Netflix newcomer in the franchise, Anne Winters. Winters’ character has certainly been targeted by fans due to her attitude towards Isaac, and the hatred continues to come. Well, the actress is aware of the backlash and, as she discussed her story arc of hers, she released a response.
I spoke to Anne Winters shortly after L’Orville: new horizons created and interviewed about the experience of not only joining an established series as a newcomer, but also of playing someone acting as an antagonist for a key character. Winters assured me that Charly Burke’s crude introduction didn’t dissuade her from taking the role. And, in fact, he found it really exciting:
It was more exciting to play the one who could generate hate in the beginning. It’s always fun for me as an actor to play someone I’m not in real life and then see the audience’s reaction to the journey I’m taking as a character. Charly has a great history with Isaac and being and being in Orville and just being herself internally all season. She could be who she is now [but] he surely learns a lot by staying at the Orville. I’m curious to see what the audience thinks towards the end.
Anne Winters didn’t reveal much about Charly’s future when we spoke, but so far it doesn’t seem like her perception of Isaac has changed much. Charly resented Isaac’s presence on the ship, as Kaylon’s attack on her previous mission, the Quimby, had resulted in the loss of a friend. Burke openly expressed concern for him to Captain Mercer, as well as to the other members of the ship.
When Isaac deactivated, Burke eventually brought him back to life using skills that no one else on the crew possessed. He made it clear that he didn’t do it because she loved Isaac, and the episode implied that he could have done it to ease the guilt of Claire’s son Marcus, who had also helped bully Isaac.
The ship’s new second navigator has not yet found an easy foothold with Isaac at this point, which could certainly lead some fans to judge the character. Anne Winters had a pretty simple answer for anyone who might be tempted, she basically warned them not to:
I’d say if they’re going to judge Charly, then they like Charly.
Charlie Burke seems like a good person, based on his relationships with others, so it’s possible he’ll understand Isaac better over time. However, one wonders if how long orville could be erased (again) , because season 4 is no guarantee. Gossipify spoke to Anne Winters and others about the possibility of a new season and the answers implied that it could be reduced to how Subscribe Hulu tune in and how much excitement it generates among social media users. I think it’s fair to say that the series has definitely taken a step forward with hers serious storytelling in season three, so it would be nice to see how that affects Charly’s story arc and the others.
