Duran Duran: Internet user discovers model who inspired the cover of ‘Rio’ with the help of a Brazilian

Instagram user identified the model who served as reference for the cover of Duran Duran’s 1982 album

Painted by American artist and illustrator Patrick Nagel and later designed by Malcolm Garrettthe cover model of River (1982), from Duran Duranhas finally been discovered.

An Instagram user, with the profile @nagel_angel, claimed to have spent “countless hours” looking for the reference used by Nagel. Marcie Huntcurrently known as Marcie Dinkelhas been identified as the woman who inspired the art that resembles classic cigarette packaging from the 1950s.

“Thank you, @ser.sarah.bastos for helping to identify her”, wrote @nagel_angel in the caption, mentioning a Brazilian architect.

According to the profile, although Nagel died just two years after finishing the illustration, his assistant, Barry Hahnconfirmed that Marcie was the reference.

Himself Duran Duran celebrated the end of the mystery by sharing @nagel_angel’s post on her Instagram profile. The photo reached Huntwho commented: “This is so cool! I didn’t know until today that this photo of me was used on the cover of Rio.”

“Very cool! I love it Duran Duran and I danced a lot to their music in the 1980s… And later at my wedding”, he continued.
