Warning: MAIN SPOILERS BELOW throughout Season 4’s Strange things.
Strange things finally released the final two episodes of season 4, and didn’t hesitate to deliver twists, twists, turns, and tragedies before the credits. Although Eleven managed to save Max’s life, this time the heroes didn’t win, and it’s all thanks to Vecna aka One and Henry. Jamie Campbell Bower played the new big villain in Netflix’s hit, which involved wearing an elaborate prosthetic costume to complete the nightmare look. That said, the actor told Gossipify how he prepared to play Vecna without the suit.
After leaving the flight. 2 and the revelation of Vecna’s proximity to killing both Max and Eleven, Jamie Campbell Bower spoke to Gossipify. After agreeing that it’s a “good” sign that his character might be scary enough to cause some nightmares, he explained how he perfected his portrayal of Vecna while wearing all those prosthetics for scenes with Millie. Bobby Brown (who had a tearful reaction ) as Eleven and Sadie Sink as Max:
The physical aspect of playing with something bulky enough was a process I obviously had to go through, and a process that started before I even started using it. I have videos and photos on my phone trying to do my makeup with Barrie. [Gower], and just say the words in the costume, and I was halfway there. But in my free time, without a costume, I thought about the hand, how it would move, how it would hold me, where my physical and emotional strength came from.
The only scenes of Jamie Campbell Bower without prosthetics may have been when she played One before the Hawkins Lab massacre, but she was able to prepare to play Vecna without wearing the full costume. Prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower once told Gossipify on the process of creating Vecna as a “very down to earth, down to earth character”, and Bower’s comments show that he didn’t need to wear Vecna prosthetics from head to toe to perfect his performance as Strange thingsThe latest (and perhaps the most dangerous) villain. The actor continued:
And then energetically, in esoteric terms, energetically, I am speaking here, of forcing an energy out of its natural place of detention, so to speak. Force him out of here to break through the skin and take control of space, take control of the space I was in.
With Jamie Campbell Bower’s skin covered in the prosthetics that helped make Vecna so visually terrifying, she was also able to use her energy and physique to get her performance done. She couldn’t be as expressive with her face as her prosthetic-less co-stars, but she was still able to “own the space” after all of her prep outside the locker room. She explained the “long process” of perfecting her interpretation of Vecna:
So it was a long process for both of us to think about it, first, to try in terms of trying these moves, trying how it would work, a calm. And then put all of this in your app. I was lucky enough to be able to see sets, like Mind Lair, before I had to shoot them. I have a tutorial on it. So yeah, everything, just think, move, do it all the time. It was great.
The Mind Lair was a new (and very disturbing) setting for season four, and it was fitting that the actor toured the space before taking on the role of Vecna in all her evil glory at the helm. Between his costumed look, Bower’s physical performance and the way the character killed his victims (complete with scary sound effects ), Vecna can become the most terrifying villain Strange things history.
Of course, a lot depends on what happens in the fifth and final season. There’s always the question of just how threatening the Mind Flayer really is, and Vecna can unleash the Upside Down on Hawkins after Season 4 ends. Eddie’s death (This actor Joseph Quinn revealed that it was “weird” to shoot for an intriguing reason ) means that the heroes have one less ally than before the season 4 finale, and it seems safe to say that Max won’t be in the thick of the action like before.
It is not yet known when fans can expect Season 5, but hopefully the wait won’t be as long as the wait for Season 4 after Season 3 in 2019! For now, fans can still use netflix subscription to see and review all four seasons so far. Strange things (opens in a new tab) slowly but surely it filled the mythology of the Upside Down to set the stage for what should be an epic showdown to close the series.
