The experimental contemporary music event brings artists from different parts of the world
The fifth edition of CHIIII – Creative Music Festival takes place from July 14th to 20th with a program that features artists with different backgrounds and styles who promote improvisation and sound experimentation. The program includes works with electronic elements, the use of the voice as an instrument, synthesizers, noises and many other layers that challenge the limits of traditional genres, proposing new perspectives on making and consuming music.
In addition to the shows, CHIIII offers free educational activities, highlighting inclusion and accessibility as part of its pillars. Since its fourth edition, the festival has collaborated with Coletivo Devio Padrão to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities (PWD), further enhancing diversity. This year, CHIIII will also present a sensory installation for children, strengthening the commitment to plural organisms and broadening the audience experience.
“Since the first edition, we have brought together, articulated and disseminated experimental music, acting as a catalyst for exchanges between cultural agents and contemporary musicians, both nationally and internationally, in addition to its relationship with other artistic fields, such as dance and visual arts,” says Manoela Wright, responsible for curating, artistic direction and creation of CHIIII. CHIIII expands its activities and, for the first time, will have presentations in Campinas and Belo Horizonte.
Looking back a bit at its programme, the festival opens the way with Venus Garland et Tetta (DE/BR) at the Archivio Storico Comunale on 14 July at 7pm, offering a fusion of funk universes and the possibilities of the Theremin played with breasts.
On Monday the 15th, the professional training seminar with Diane Labrosse (CA) will be held at Casa Líquida, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday the 16th, starting at 8:00 p.m., Thelmo Cristovam and Rossano, accompanied by Sandra Coutinho and Saskia, will perform at the Mário de Andrade Library.
Representing both the new generation and veterans of experimental music, they promise a powerful collaboration. On Wednesday 17th, Bruno Trchmnn and Morgane Carnet (FR), as well as Carol Gás and Gustavo Infante, will perform at Sala dos Toninhos, in Campinas, starting at 8:00 p.m. Also on Wednesday, Charlotte Hug (CH) and Diane Labrosse (CA) will perform at Funarte, in Belo Horizonte, at 7:00 p.m. The show is part of the festival with two projects: Quartas de Improviso + Pequenas Sessões.
On Thursday 18th Tetta (BR/DE) leads a workshop at the Goethe-Institut. At night, Hug and Labrosse return to the Sala Toninhos at 8pm. On Friday 19th, Morgane Carnet (FR) and Leandro Souza, followed by Inés Terra (AR/BR), Everton Santos and Charlotte Hug (CH), will take over the Biblioteca Mário de Andrade from 8pm.
On Saturday 20th BELLACOMSOM will hold a Workshop for children aged 11 to 14, entitled “Tactile Noise”. The attraction will last two hours and will address sound as a sensory experience, with the use of instruments and games aimed at introducing the basic fundamentals of electronics and the possibilities of producing sound with a variety of materials and resources. In parallel to the workshop, the artist presents a sensory installation for children of the same age group. Designed together with Jorge Crowe (AR), the attraction is open from 10:00 to 18:00, in the Tendal da Lapa. Later, starting at 18:00, performances by Afrodida, Mariá Portugal, Diane Labrosse (CA) and Estela Lapponi will take place on site. On the same date, Lilian Nakahodo, Paola Ribeiro and Raiany Sinara will present the creation they developed in a residency the previous day. It will also be in Tendal da Lapa.
The event culminates with a performance by CHIIIIUUU, which serves as an invitation to a sonic adventure where the artists don’t know who they’ll be performing with and the audience doesn’t know what they’ll be watching.
