Planet Hemp celebrates three decades of impact in show: ‘A 30-year-old man’

To Rolling Stone Brazil, Marcelo D2 and BNegão recalled three decades of the band’s history and the show Based on Real Events: 30 Years of Smoke

Back in 1993, just over 30 years ago, Marcelo D2, Skunk, Rafael, Ant It is Cod decided to found the band Planet Hempwhich has managed to survive over the years, despite the artists swimming against many tides in Brazil, a country that has a lot of resistance to sensitive issues that the group portrays, such as marijuana, racism, prejudice, etc.

Now formed by Marcelo D2, BNegão, Ant, Pedro Garcia, Daniel Ganjaman, Nobru It is Venom, Planet Hemp is preparing to celebrate three decades of existence with a show, entitled Based on True Events: 30 Years of Smokeat the Unimed Spacein São Paulo, on the night of this Thursday, the 11th. With all tickets sold, the party, which promises to be historic, will still be recorded to become a DVD (or audiovisual, or live album).

However, before this important celebration in the career of these artists, the band spent about 20 years without releasing new songs. After the acclaimed The Invasion of the Shrewd Smoke Man (2000), Gardeners arrived only in 2022. During this period, the group continued on the road and even released a live album in 2001.

Due to this long window without releases, the members of Planet Hemp decided to update the catalog with a very different show and to have something that updates Planet Hemp (Live)2001. “We are in a new moment after these two Grammys[Latinos que ganharam com Jardineiros] that we won,” he said Marcelo D2 during an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.

It would be interesting for us to revisit our work. We have little material from the last few years because, apart from Jardineiros, we hadn’t released anything for 20 years, with little material on YouTube and on social media.

So, with a different lineup compared to the one at the beginning, in addition to having a solid show on the road, the band decided to “record this DVD,” whose definition is still very ambiguous for D2 and BNegãowho was also present at the conversation.

“It’s crazy to say DVD because DVD doesn’t exist anymore. Audiovisual doesn’t catch on, right? It’s like certain laws in Brazil. They don’t catch on,” said D2. Described as a band of “ultra cariocas” by BNegão, Planet Hemp decided to bring the celebration to São Paulo, but they explain why they did not choose Rio de Janeiro for Based on True Events: 30 Years of Smoke.

Second D2the group has an interesting structure in São Paulo, in addition to most of the special guests, such as Mr. Jorge, Emicide, Pitty, Creole, BaianaSystem, Black Alien, Major RD, Rodrigo Lima, The Mercenaries, Mike Muir It is DJ Zegonlive in the capital of São Paulo.

Planet Hemp

Furthermore, the city has a lot of identification with Planet Hemp. There, the band recorded MTV Livereleased the main albums (User, The Dogs Bark But the Caravan Doesn’t Stop It is The Invasion of the Shrewd Smoke Man) and have great influences on music, such as Basement rats, Thaide It is DJ Hum.

Now, what did the people present at the Unimed Space can you expect from the show? To BNegão“the parade is going to be really crazy” and unique, both due to the high-caliber guests and the entire stage structure, inspired by Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

“We are celebrating 30 years, but at the same time, whoever is there will see something that will never happen again,” said the singer, who assured that the band will not take the show to other cities and states. “That’s why people are coming from all over Brazil. That’s a big responsibility.”

You can expect something unique, so whoever wants to experience it will see it. And whoever isn’t there will see the audiovisual product, man.

Gardeners turned Planet Hemp into an award-winning band

In the last almost two years, the band has released the fourth studio album of their career, Gardenersand has literally been reaping the fruits of great work, which yielded the first Grammy of the history of Planet Hemp. Oddly enough, the group was not familiar with such a big hit.

“It’s being really fucking responsible. On this album, we did something that didn’t usually happen: we won a lot of awards.” [risos],” he said BNegão. “It’s funny that we always competed, but we never won. So we didn’t really care. And then it started. I remember when we left the awards ceremony Grammy for the party, I arrived to Marcelo: ‘So now we know the type of band that wins awards’ [risos].”

“It wasn’t like it really happened, we never won anything,” he added. D2in what BNegão He reaffirmed, in great humor: “100% of nothing.”

We’ve always set the bar high and managed to make something that’s still there. It’s incredible to make a relevant album that brings new things and aims to make a fuss. It’s the classic role of someone who works creatively, to not repeat things. I’m happy and very proud to have this album.

Planet Hemp, a 30 year old wise man

If we do an imagination exercise and think about what it would be like Planet Hemp if it were a 30-year-old adult human being, Marcelo D2 It is BNegão They commented on how he would be a very wise person, with scars and everything. In fact, this would be an idea discarded for Gardeners.

“O Planet It would be a mine. The album would start and we would say: ‘F***, I woke up after a long time, what happened? What!? Middle Ages came back?’ Seeing all the setbacks that happened during the time we were stopped,” he recalled BNegão.

I.e, Planet I would be one of those people who makes their own path, regardless of whether it is good or bad. In joy or in sadness. I do more than I believe. I would live a radical life, both in terms of opinion and action and art, too.

Already D2 he gave his opinion on what a person who pushes the limits, always with a lot of energy, would be like: “He would be a wise old man, let’s say. Full of scars, but wise, after taking a lot of beatings.” To end the subject, BNegão made what would be the definitive form: “A 30-year-old man [risos].”

Throughout these years of existence, with gaps, Planet Hemp managed to survive the test of time and made his name in the history of Brazilian rap, despite all the difficulties the country offers artists.

Based on True Events: 30 Years of Smoke It will be further proof of the importance and size of the band in Brazilian music in general — with a lot of smoke and talent, of course.
