Last Wednesday (17), singer Charli XCX talked about her latest album brat and on the partnership with Lorde for the magazine scoreboard.
“First of all I had to tell her that this song was about her and that she felt okay about it. I had been trying to get together for almost a year and we kept having these weird clashes, like, we were going to leave, then we weren’t going. […] It didn’t work out in the end. So the day before the record came out, I left her a voicemail. She responded immediately and said, ‘Oh my God, I had no idea you felt that way.’ I’m really sorry. You know, maybe I should be on a cover of the song.’ I didn’t even ask her. She talked about it,” Charli said about the track The girl, so confused.
“I was telling her these things for the first time. There was a lot of rawness and immediacy in what I was saying. I love that we really worked it out in the remix. There’s something very childlike about it, something very meta and modern. Only Charli could do that. It opened up a channel between us and made me say things I’d never said before. I was articulating things I’d never said or maybe even things I’d never heard said. said the Lord.
The album addresses themes of jealousy and confusion that are inherent in many relationships, even if they are often left unsaid.
“I didn’t want any metaphors, not at all. I wanted this album to feel like I was speaking to the listener sincerely. I could tell you this in the back seat of a taxi, on the way to a disco.“, he revealed.
It’s worth mentioning that Charli XCX is on the July cover of Billboard.
