In an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, the duo talks about the inspirations for the album, the connection with Brazil and the mix of styles in the single ‘Hey Homie’
In an exclusive interview for Rolling Stone Brazil, Sofi Tukker revealed details about his new album called Breadwhich will be released on August 23. The duo talked about the inspirations behind the name and tracks, the influence of Brazilian music on their work and how their different musical tastes come together to create something unique.

Sofi Tukker, graduated from Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpernis about to release his new album Bread. In an exclusive interview, the artists shared details about the album’s creation process and their inspirations:
It all started with the song called Bread. And every time we looked at all the songs in sequence, we couldn’t stop laughing because one of the songs was called Bread. So we thought we had to give this name to the whole album. The more we thought about it, we realized that bread is literally pure energy.
And also, all over the world, people gather around bread to get energy and to come together. So that’s what we want our music to do for people, and it felt perfect because it can be profound if you want it to be profound, but it’s also just an everyday object that we love,” the duo explained.
The single Hey Homiewhich was recently released, reflects well the different musical influences of Sofi Tukker:
The song represents us very well because it is a clear and obvious mix of two different styles of music. Sophie was making jazz and bossa nova music when we met, and only in Portuguese, while I was making house and dance music. When we put that together, we created something unique and different,” Tucker said.
Still about Hey Homiethe duo explained that the single represents these two sides of the duo: Bossa Nova + Portuguese (Sophie) and Drum and Bass (Tucker). Just like all the other songs have this initial inspiration:
From the beginning of Sofi Tukker, it was always like this: Sophie made bossa nova music and I made house and dance music. When we first got together, we made a song called ‘Drinkee’. That was also basically our two worlds together. That was always kind of our base. So that song [‘Hey Homie’] It’s a really cool and clear way to show different sides of us and how we can bring them together to make something unique.”
The connection of Sofi Tukker with Brazil is evident in many of her songs, especially in this new phase. Sophie, who lived in Rio de Janeiro and speaks fluent Portuguese, explained:
I’ve been in love with Brazilian music for a long time. I only thought about Portuguese, but I didn’t know what to think. So I decided to learn the language. When I learned the language, I knew I had to go to Brazil. I went to Brazil and fell in love with the country so much that I wanted to stay longer and longer. The music culture is so rich and diverse. We work with Brazilian musicians, Brazilian producers, and we have some collaborations coming up with Seu Jorge. We spent a lot of time in Brazil last year, which had a big influence on the album.”
The album Bread will feature a variety of tracks that reflect the mix of styles of Sofi Tukker. Among the songs that have already been released are Spiral, Throw Some Ass and Hey Homie.
