The Social Service of Commerce (Sesc RJ) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Artists Retreatlocated in Jacarepaguá, in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. Thus, the objective is to revitalize the cultural center of the institution. So, with this collaboration, the space, which traditionally welcomes elderly artists in situations of social vulnerability, will have a regular program open to the public. In such a way that it will benefit not only the residents, but also the local community.
The newly named Sesc Retiro dos Artistas will have the mission of preserving and celebrating the memory of Brazilian culture and entertainment. The partnership includes a wide range of cultural and recreational activities, such as: theater and music performances, audiovisual exhibitions, exhibitions, and creative economy workshops, in addition to actions aimed at the physical and mental well-being of residents. In addition, among the new features, we highlight the installation of a mobile OdontoSesc unit and the staging of an unprecedented show coordinated by philosopher and educator Gabriel Chalita, with the participation of residents and guest artists.
President of the Artists’ Retreat celebrates agreement
Stepan Nercessian, president of Retiro dos Artistas, celebrated the agreement, which will last for 10 years. He then highlighted the importance of this union between two institutions committed to culture. Furthermore, he emphasized that the partnership not only enriches the lives of the 60 current residents, but also strengthens the connection with the community of Jacarepaguá. As a result, it provides access to a robust and varied cultural calendar.
Antonio Florencio de Queiroz Junior, president of Sesc RJ, emphasized that the Retiro dos Artistas is a perfect reflection of Sesc’s mission, because it combines culture and social assistance. He stated that the partnership was a long-awaited initiative and that it will now allow residents to better integrate with the cultural activities offered by Sesc, further valuing their contributions throughout their lives.
The residents of Retiro dos Artistas, such as actor Rui Resende and Argentine ballerina Morita Heredia, expressed enthusiasm for the new phase. For Rui, who has lived at the retreat for five years, the partnership promises to intensify contact with art and create new opportunities for involvement. Morita, a resident for almost a year, welcomes the expansion of cultural and social activities, which she already enjoyed during her visits to Sesc.
