Diana, icon of Brazilian sentimental music, dies at 76

The cause of death has not yet been released, but a heart attack is suspected.

Singer-songwriter Diana, one of the most popular voices in Brazilian sentimental music, was found dead by her son André Iorio in her home in the municipality of Araruama, Rio de Janeiro. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but it is suspected that she had a heart attack while sleeping.

The news of her death was confirmed by the municipality of Iguaba Grande, the municipality where Diana was taken to the Emergency Room (UPA) to try to be revived.

Diana’s Career

Registered as Ana Maria Siqueira Iorio, the musical artist rose to fame with her album “Diana” (1972), which became one of the biggest hits of the 1970s.

The album made history with hits such as “Não Queima a Esperança”, composed by Raul Seixas (1945-1989) and Mauro Motta, and the song “Pode Brigamos”, a Portuguese version of the prestigious “I Am… I Said”, by Neil Diamond, and another translated re-recording of “Tudo Que Eu Tem”, from the original “Everything I Own”, by David Gates.

At the height of her career, Diana was married to singer and composer Odair José, with whom she had a very turbulent relationship. Despite the dissolutions, the relationship was marked by the song “Foi Tudo Culpa do Amor” (1974), published years before the singer’s artistic life gradually lost strength, without ceasing to abandon her performances.

Diana also recorded albums with other new songs, although her career was recognized nationally with the hits of the 70s. It is worth mentioning that her successes were covered by artists such as Barbara Eugenia, helping to strengthen her position as one of the great Brazilian references of that time.
