Before the relaunch of Ziggy Stardust with Atmos sound, a new music video for the song “Starman” pairs the song with previously unseen footage shot by Mick Rock.
The famous photographer filmed the material in 1972 and 1973 while Bowie toured in support of the album. The clip includes close-ups of the artist’s bright red boots and fans’ hands reaching for the stage as the guitarist Mick Ronson approached, as well as unusual perspectives of Bowie and her hot red hair singing the song in color and black and white.
The Atmos edition of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972), which will be released on September 6, will present the album in spatial audio. The Blu-ray audio version includes the Atmos mix, a new stereo mix, and the original mix, which has been remastered. Ken Scottwho co-produced the original album, did the Atmos mixing with Emre Ramazanoglu at RAK Studios in London.
“You are there with the artist, with David“, he said Scott in a statement about the new Atmos mix. “He was so theatrical that I think being able to put him in an immersive place makes this a good choice for an Atmos mix. My philosophy with this was to make it feel more like a live experience. And I even had him move around the stage a little bit at the end, the way he would in real life. I hope it feels like you’re in the theater watching this incredible show.”
The reissue follows the release of a box set, Rock n Roll Star, which featured demos, live recordings and alternate takes from the era. Ziggy Stardust. “The collection narrates the vision of Bowie from the album Ziggy Stardustfrom a concept album about what he called the rock messiah archetype, to an androgynous beacon of inclusion,” Rolling Stone wrote in a positive review.
