Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are back and this time they mean business. The group has released the long-awaited 18th album study, Wild Godthis Friday, August 30, which marks the triumphant return after the acclaimed success of Ghosteen in 2019. With the launch of Wild GodNick Cave proves that, even after decades of career, he still knows how to surprise and fascinate his audience.
The first impression is that Wild God leaves is that of a work that pulsates with energy, an album complex in its composition, but at the same time irresistibly contagious. Nick Cave, in commenting on the album, does not spare praise: “It is a complicated record, but it’s also deeply and joyously infectious.“And when Cave says this, you can bet he’s not exaggerating.
Wild God is a deliberate departure from the darker tone that has characterized the band’s previous releases. This album is a celebration, an explosion of life that transports the listener into a lighter, more expansive mood. As Cave describes it, “There’s no messing around with this record. When he does it right, he does it right. It lifts you up. It moves you. I love that about him.”
Produced by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, Wild God features contributions from core members of the Bad Seeds, as well as appearances by Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood on bass and Luis Almau, who adds layers of nylon strings and acoustic guitars that give the album a rich and varied texture. Recording took place at the iconic Miraval Studios in Provence, France and Soundtree Studios in London, resulting in a fusion of environments that echoes the album’s sonic diversity.
One of the highlights of Wild God it’s the single Frogswhich quickly became a fan favorite. The song, which Cave cites as the first to be written for the album, references the biblical story of Cain and Abel, with lines as powerful as they are haunting: “Earlier this week, he knelt down and crushed his brother’s head with a bone/It’s my great privilege to escort you home.” The lyrical brutality is, at the same time, contrasted by a musical joy that makes the music resonate deeply with the listener.
Frogs It’s not just a song, it’s an experience. As Cave comments: “The sheer exuberance of a song like “Frogs” just makes me smile.“And it’s not just him; the song is already gaining traction on the charts and fans can’t wait to see it live.
