Throughout Oasis’ existence, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have collected some historical conflicts, such as the MTV Unplugged episode in 1996
Since before the Oasis achieve worldwide success with hits such as “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” and “Champagne Supernova,” the brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher fought a lot among themselves. In fact, there was one time when Liam watched the band’s show from the audience and even booed his brother during the performance.
When preparing for a show at MTV Unplugged In 1996, Liam didn’t seem very concerned about his body and career. During the weeks of rehearsals, he complained of a sore throat and missed most of the dates. Since his presence was unpredictable, the band members began to question whether he would go on stage to sing.
According to information from Music Radarthe producer Jac Benson recalled the situation: “They told us he didn’t want to sing much because he wanted to save his voice. But you get to the point where it’s like, ‘What’s up with this guy? Is he going to show up or not?'”
When the day of the recording arrived, MTV Unplugged, Liam showed up to sing at rehearsal, but he wasn’t prepared at all. “I think we rehearsed for two weeks beforehand and Liam only showed up once or twice. On the day of the performance, he didn’t show up and there were rumors that he’d been drinking for a few days… and no one knew where he was,” Noel recalled (via Showbiz Cheat Sheet).
About an hour before we were supposed to go in, he showed up, completely drunk. We said, well, look, let’s see if you can sing a few songs, and it was f***ing horrible.
Then, Liam recognized that he could not sing and decided not to perform with the Oasis. Then, Noel was responsible for singing lead vocals: “I think I did a pretty good job, to be quite honest with you.” However, he suffered from his brother’s behavior in the audience.
I remember hearing someone say ‘Liam “He’s in the house.’ One of the cameramen comes over and there’s Liam with some champagne. He’s drinking it and just slowly clapping his hands together. As soon as he knew the camera was on him, he kind of acknowledged the fact that ‘yeah, I’m up here drinking on the balcony and not performing today,'” he said. Benson.
At a certain point, Noel Gallagher told his brother to “shut up.” When producers of the MTV Unplugged asked to Oasis play the first song one more time, Liam wanted to go on stage, according to Noel.
“And of course then Liam comes in and wants to sing. After we’ve been playing for an hour and a half or something. We tell him to f*** off. And he goes home in a bad mood,” he said.
