Billie Eilish Reveals Hit Song ‘Birds of a Feather’ Was Born in Sao Paulo

The singer shared a video of the song’s creative process during her journey along Marginal Pinheiros

The song “Birds of a Feather,” the lead hit from Billie Eilish’s album “Hit Me Hard And Soft,” has a Brazilian twist to its production. The singer revealed that the song was created during a car ride along Marginal Pinheiros, in São Paulo, on her way to Lollapalooza 2023.

Improvised production in Sao Paulo

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Show, Billie said the song was produced in the back seat of the car that was taking her to the show. She showed a video of her brother adjusting the music on a laptop during their drive through the landscape of Sao Paulo. “Me and Finneas [seu irmão e parceiro de produção] We were on our way to Lollapalooza and decided to change the song right then and there. This is very common for us, we always work in random places,” the artist said. The festival show broke attendance records, with more than 100,000 people in attendance.

Various versions until the final

Billie explained that “Birds of a Feather” went through several changes before reaching the final version. “This song never felt right. We worked on it for a long time, adding and removing things. The thing about this video is that it shows such an old version that sounds completely different to the current one. It’s amazing to see how far he’s come,” she said.

Other successes produced on the road

The singer also revealed that “No Time to Die,” the theme song to the James Bond film, was recorded during her tour, on the bus she was using, in a makeshift setting in her bunk bed. Both hits stand out as an important part of her musical trajectory.

Success in the charts and at the Olympic Games

“Birds of a Feather” hit the top of Spotify in August 2024, accumulating more than 925 million streams. The music video already has more than 60 million views on YouTube. The song was also part of the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, held in Los Angeles, when the singer performed alongside the band Red Hot Chili Peppers and rappers Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.
