THE Koala Festival reaches its 10th edition and one of the attractions of this year’s line-up is the singer and songwriter Tulip Ruizwhich receives Creole as a guest on the show. “It’s a festival that I’m very excited about as an artist and also as an audience,” she says in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.

The presentation of Tulip It takes place on Saturday, but she says she has planned to watch the shows on Friday and Sunday as well. She enjoys being among the public and explains that she makes music because she likes music. The exchange with other artists is also a precious moment for the singer.

I like shows, I like live music and I really like festivals. As an artist, it ends up becoming a mashup, a whirlwind of audiences. There are people there who are coming to see me and who may not be that familiar with my work.

The “constant formation of new audiences” is one of the things she likes most about the dynamics of festivals. In the case of Koala, Tulip highlights the mix of generations as one of the positive aspects. “There are older people, younger people. People who have just arrived in music.”

The invitation to the 10th anniversary edition was special for the artist, who is already familiar with the event. “When I participated, it was a very special show. Liniker participated and I cherish this encounter with great affection. It wasn’t even planned. It was my show, but she was in the audience and we exchanged during that show.”

The singer considers it important to participate in an edition that celebrates the longevity of the event. “One of my main goals with music has to do with crossing time, the freshness of the timeless. The festival is connected to this, crossing time with great elegance and maturity.

Special guest

This time the artist takes the stage with Creole as a guest. The two are longtime partners and had not been on stage together for some time. “Before there was a record, Creole was one of the first people who sang ‘I Only Know How to Dance with You‘ before I even recorded the song.”

Their first albums were contemporary, which meant that they often encountered each other on releases. “We really like each other. On my second album [Tudo Tanto (2012)]he participates in ‘Viper‘, he is one of the authors and many people don’t know that.

The two are also partners in “Business Card” from the disk Summon Your Buddha (2014). Tulipa even accompanied him on part of the album’s promotional tour. She talks about the possibilities of the repertoire: “We want to do several things.”

These meetings are very interesting because they spark in us a desire to exchange our repertoires and a desire to risk things that are not part of our repertoires.

About setist, Tulip talks about taking a “wall of hits” mixing songs from all the albums on Koala. She is currently touring her latest album, Extraordinary Skills (2022). “But for this show, since there is this meeting, we are going to mix our repertoires.”

I bring

In 2024 Tulip launched I bring — in partnership with his brother, Gustavo Ruiz, Alexandre Orion and Rich Amabis. “He just came out on the label Sesc on CD, which is a medium that we haven’t heard so much about, but Sesc There have been some print runs where the graphic design and the insert are very well taken care of, so it is practically a book.”

I bring was born almost 10 years ago in Rio de Janeiro for a project called Crosswordwhich mixed music and visual arts. “The Marcio Debellianwho is a cultural producer from Rio de Janeiro, invited me and I thought about bringing Rica and Alexandre to do these shows.”

The meeting was so nourishing that we ended up making several songs. They have been healing over time. We recorded it back then and have been producing it over the years. Now we have decided to release it and it reaches the world in a very elegant way.

15 years of Ephemera

Next year, the celebrated debut album by Tulip, Ephemeralturns 15. So far the artist has nothing set in stone to celebrate the date, but she does not rule out the possibility. The first decade of the album’s existence was celebrated in several stages, with two commemorative pressings by Three Seals.

“I also made a remix album with 11 producers.” In the audiovisual field, the artist released a visual album, which is available on her official YouTube channel. “We recorded it practically in one sequence shot in Modernist Housein Sao Paulo.”

For the 15th anniversary, the artist is considering a new pressing. “The Ephemeral It goes through time very well, we release vinyl and it ends. People look for it on CD, because there is a life in this media that even surprises me.”

Dance (2015) also completes a decade and the composer is still working on a new album. Whether in celebrations or new works, listening to — and watching — Tulip Ruiz It’s always a treat.
