Rock In Rio 2024: Planet Hemp Unites Rock, Criticism and Singing with Pitty

The group is known for its lyrics that address the legalization of marijuana

The audience that had started the afternoon applauding Barão Vermelho on the Sunset stage and Paralamas on the Mundo stage returned in force to Sunset, in the late afternoon of Sunday 15, to follow the musical path that combines national rock and political criticism. It was the turn of Planet Hemp, a band that since its creation in 1993 has defended the legalization of marijuana, freedom of expression and the rights of the less well-off social classes.

For any unwary person, the first sentence of the show was enough to recognize the band’s main banner: amidst the sounds of a plane taking off, an electronic voice announced, as if it were the captain of a departing flight: “Smoking is permitted on board”.

The first song was Making the head. Before Legalize nowThe musicians threw an inflatable marijuana cigarette into the audience, which began to circulate around the audience. At the end of the show, Planet Hemp welcomed Bahian rocker Pitty, who sang classics like Brave new chip.

Planet Hemp’s participation in Rock in Rio lasted 23 years: the band was expected for the 2001 edition, because the previous year they had released an album that had been very successful, but they were not invited, which disappointed the public at the time. After two decades there is nothing left to complain about. This Sunday there was only applause.
