American alternative rock band known for songs like “Jane Says,” “Been Caught Stealing,” “Mountain Song” and “Just Because,” Jane’s Addiction was at the beginning of a reunion tour with the original lineup when the members canceled shows and announced a hiatus after the vocalist Perry Farrell attack the guitarist Dave Navarrowho commented on how the band should not continue.

“I was rereading Leaves of Grass of [Walt] Whitman and it occurred to me that there is a strong parallel between his work and ours,” he wrote. “The leaves represent the cycle of life and death, but he continued to work on the body of poems until his own death in 1892.”

“Perhaps he, like us, failed to fully understand his own work, because he continually tried to rewrite it, add to it, and expand upon it, wishing the life cycle of the work itself away… just as we did,” he continued.

Perhaps it is simpler to recognize when something is gone and learn from the magical lesson of grief, rather than to avoid it and remain in a consistent state of dissatisfaction.”
