To celebrate his 54th birthday this Friday, the 20th, Edi Rock released Origens 3 – O Show accompanied by an exciting mini-documentary

In the early evening of Tuesday, September 17, 2024, a line could be seen to enter the Cultural Packa cultural center located in República, a central region of the city of São Paulo. At around 7 pm, the lower floor of the venue was already full. The reason? The premiere event of the new DVD by Edivaldo Pereira Alvesmember of the Racional MC’s better known as Ed Rocktitled Origins 3 – The Show.

Released by Free Sound this Friday, the 20th, the project arrives to close a trilogy started in 2019 with Originsa 14-track album that featured partnerships with MC Pedro, Xande of Pillars, Rael, Alexandre Carloamong others. The second chapter, entitled Origins Part 2 – Yesterday, Today and Tomorrowwas released in October 2020.

However, with The Show, Ed Rock chose to do a different job. The project has 15 re-recordings with collaborations from various artists, such as Mano Brown and Mr. Jorgemade in presentation at Audioin São Paulo, on the rapper’s 53rd birthday, in September 2023. In addition, he also released a mini-documentary, directed by Raffa Souza and carried out by ROC7which tells interesting aspects of his life and career.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil in the Cultural Packthe artist, who turned 54 this Friday, the 20th, explained how he conceived the project in a different way, but had to recalculate the route after some problems he had.

I recovered, went back to work, my partners supported me a lot during this difficult time. I decided to put on a show and call my friends who were by my side and record it.

Not just something intimate for Ed Rockbut Origins 3 – The Show It is also a summary of what music and rap mean to him, especially since the recording took place at a time when hip hop celebrated its 50th anniversary.

“I gave a birthday present to myself, my friends, fans and hip hop lovers,” he celebrated. “Because I still try to make Brazilian rap, even with all the influence of American music. I try to filter it and bring it to our Brazilianness.”

The three releases of Origins are not purely of Ed Rock. The project is also very marked by the various collaborations, which include artists beyond rap, such as Thiaguinho, Mr. Jorge, Lauana Prado, Xande of Pillars, Alexandre Carloamong others. Of course, Mano Brown, Lino Krizz, MV Bill and other names in Brazilian hip hop also stand out in the solo career of the member of Rational.

Just look at the names of my everyday partners! I like partnerships because, at the same time that I create something different from what I do, I also learn. [Isso] It adds not only to my career and to those I strengthen, but it strengthens rap. I show that it is possible to do it in many ways. There is no rule.

Despite Origins 3 – The Show not to count on new songs, he arrives with a very interesting mini-documentary, with testimonies from the man himself Ed Rock and participation of important people in his life, such as Dexter and Mano Brown.

In audiovisual production, he also has a very interesting person: Jorge Henryalso known as Jobwho introduced the singer to KL JayDJ of the Rational. “This mini-documentary is like a bonus, a plus,” he said. “I’m not going to make a DVD every day, every hour. I don’t know when I’ll record or have the opportunity to record another occasion.”

“I wanted to share a little of my thoughts, my identity, personality and opinion as a rapper, citizen, influencer, teacher, student and survivor of São Paulo,” he continued. “I am 54 years old. We went against what people said would be impossible to do or difficult to do.”

In other words, the mini-documentary brings the vision of Ed Rockboth about life and art, with moments of routine, friends and curiosities: “These are details that I wanted to present and I don’t know if I will have another chance.”

The celebration of hip hop

Created in the 1970s, hip hop is currently 51 years old. Ed Rock has 40 career years, while the Rational have 36. In other words, the culture lived more with the singer and the group than without.

Man, I was there at the beginning. It’s like my adoptive mother. She adopted me with all the love, so I just gave back. I try to give back to this day, being faithful or loyal. Or my adoptive father, like for the guys who didn’t have a father. For them, rap was the father. For the [Ice] Blue, Brown, KL Jay… for me it was my adoptive mother and my adoptive father. It’s like God in heaven and rap on earth.

Speaking of Rationalthe iconic Brazilian rap group is working on their fifth studio album, the successor to X-ray of Brazil (1993), Surviving in Hell (1997), Nothing like a Day after Another Day (2002) and Colors & Values (2014). Previously, Ice Blue and KL Jay talked about the project. Now, Ed Rock gave some details.

“We work 24/48 on the album. So it’s all about focus. The focus is totally on the album at this point,” he said. “I go to the studio every single day, clock in and work through the night to be able to bring good quality, maintain quality and fidelity to what we’re recording.” Rational and rap represents our fans, friends, our gang and family. This is going to be some of our best work.”

Edi Rock beyond rap

Known for his various works in rap, Ed Rock decided to develop a project within music that would stray a little from this musical genre. On August 31, 2024, he held the first edition of Edi Rock Samba Soulwhich celebrates black music, and featured guests such as Marcio Art, Lino Krizz and DJ Grand Master Ney.

“I was a DJ, right? So I haven’t lost that mania for dancing, for parties… I wanted to bring something that wasn’t repetitive and just rap, but the influences of where I came from,” he explained. “The 1990s and 1980s were very important to us. I wanted to bring that to remember, experience and value what we are today. We are only who we are because of these roots.”

I want to show and promote what influenced and guided us. It’s a tribute to that time that will never come back. Not even in another life, perhaps. I think it’s cool to make people experience that today, with me.
