Big Ocean (also known as Big O!cean) is an innovative K-Pop group, being the first to include deaf members. The group tries to convey the message that music should be felt, regardless of hearing ability. They created the S-Pop genre, which is pop performed in Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (IS).
Who are the members of Big O!cean
• Hyunjin Park: Main voice, he lost his hearing at the age of two due to a high fever. He uses a cochlear implant and has a degree in computer engineering.
• Lee Chanyeon: Leading rapper, he also has a cochlear implant, having lost his hearing at the age of 11. He has a degree in speech therapy and has worked as a speech therapist.
• Kim Jiseok: The youngest member was born hard of hearing and uses hearing aids. He is the main dancer of the group.
Big O!cean uses a unique approach to creating his music, integrating visual and sonic elements that can be enjoyed by everyone, including those with hearing impairments. Performances include sign language interpretation, allowing the song’s message to be conveyed in an accessible and inclusive way.
The group debuted on April 20, 2023, with the song “Glow”, a remake of the HOT track “Hope”, released in 1998.
Big O!cean’s proposition is not only to entertain, but also to promote awareness of deafness and inclusion in the music industry.
