The English prodigy recorded an album together with the band Flaming Lips
Nell Smitha 17-year-old English musical prodigy, died following a car accident on Saturday evening (5). The death was confirmed by Simone Raymondeco-founder of the record label Beautiful Unionwith whom the artist had a contract. He was preparing to release his first original album, previously scheduled for 2025.
Smith gained fame in 2021 when he collaborated with the North American band Flaming lips to record successes Nick Grotta. Titled Where the viaduct loomsthe album contained nine songs and marked Smith’s release into the world.
On her Instagram, Raymonde shared several photos of the artist and said that, for now, Bella Union will not comment on Smith’s work with the label.
How was Nell Smith’s career?
Nell Smith was born in Leeds, England in 2007 and moved with her family to Canada in 2012. At the age of 11 she began performing, singing and playing with several professional musicians. On his official website, Smith stated that he has always had a connection with music, greatly appreciating artists such as David Bowie, Arcade fire AND Flaming lips.
Nell caught the attention of Wayne Coynelead singer of the Flaming Lips, after a show in 2018, after managing to send a letter to the band’s bus. The singer remained in contact with Smith’s family and, in 2021, the girl and the group reunited to record nine covers of songs by Nick Cave, composer of Where the viaduct looms.
Smith raised about $15,000 on a crowdfunding platform to record his new album independently. The singer had previously said she hoped the album’s sales and the tour that followed would help her realize her dream of studying music in England.
