Production of “Building the Band” remains uncertain following tragic death
Former One Direction member Liam Payne recorded the reality musical “Building the Band” for Netflix before his tragic death in Buenos Aires last Wednesday (10/16). The show, which seeks to form a successful new pop band, is now facing uncertainty over its launch, with executives divided over whether it will go on air. While some defend the release as a tribute, others believe the climate is not right for the premiere. Liam was one of the judges on the show.
Important formats and judges
The reality show was born with a different proposal: the 50 participants could not see each other during their presentations, being evaluated only on voice and artistic compatibility. In addition to Payne, the jury included Nicole Scherzinger (ex-Pussycat Dolls) and Kelly Rowland (ex-Destiny’s Child), and the presentation was entrusted to AJ McLean (Backstreet Boys).
The future of “Building the Band”
Recording concluded in August, during a series of shows in Manchester, and editing the program would take three to six months. However, after the tragedy, the program had to be changed. Neither Netflix nor the production company Remarkable have officially commented on the next steps of the reality show.
It is worth mentioning that One Direction was formed on a music reality show, X-Factor, in 2010. Initially, the five members – Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik – competed individually. None of them, however, participated in the competition as soloists. The decision to form a boy band was prompted by the judges, including Simon Cowell, who saw potential in the five of them together as a group.
