Linkin Park singer chose a song from a band he had the opportunity to collaborate with
Chester Benningtonwho left us in 2017, was passionate about music. In 2014, the singer of LinkinPark and Stone Temple Pilots shared several indications in this regard — and one of them highlighted his connection with the second band, with which he worked briefly precisely during the interview period.
The website Shortlist invited Bennington to create a playlist with some of your favorite songs from life in different situations. The vocalist chose “Faust Arp”from Radioheadlike your favorite sad song; “ABC”from jackson 5like the song of your childhood; and “Breaking the Habit”from LinkinParkas my favorite track.
One of the categories was “favorite movie soundtrack.” Chester chose “Big Empty”from Stone Temple Pilots. The song initially appeared in the film The Crow (1994), starring Brandon Leeand was later included on the album Purplereleased by the band in the same year.
When commenting on the track, the singer also spoke about the group, with which he worked at the time. Bennington he said:
‘Big Empty’from Stone Temple Pilotsfrom the soundtrack of ‘The Crow’It’s definitely at the top. It’s a great movie and this song really fits its vibe, adding to the emotional impact, and it’s even better because it’s from a band that, at that time, was really growing up.”
The Crow was marked by the death of Brandon Lee during filming. The actor and son of the legendary Bruce Lee was hit on set by live fire from a gun that was supposed to contain fake ammunition.
Chester He also commented on the accident involving the 28-year-old actor, something that contributed to the promotion of the film in a negative but effective way. The musician stated:
It is clear that the death of the protagonist Brandon Lee during production helped secure cult status, but despite this, I think ‘The Crow’ I would still have achieved this if the tragedy had not occurred.”
Chester Bennington and Stone Temple Pilots
The choice of “Big Empty” like your favorite movie soundtrack shows that Chester Bennington I was really a fan of Stone Temple Pilots. This made the situation a lot easier in 2013, when the brothers’ band Dean and Robert DeLeo finally ended the troubled partnership with the vocalist Scott Weiland by bringing the singer from LinkinPark.
In an interview with the website Suicide Girls (via Igor Miranda), Bennington reflected on the tranquility with which the partnership emerged. The vocalist said:
In fact, it was as easy as a phone call. One afternoon, I received the question. We have people in common who work in several different bands, both with us and with them, and they asked me if I wanted to work with STP. They informed me that they had taken Scott and they wanted to move on and write new music, tour and breathe life back into the band. And I said yes.”
Chester divided the agenda between Stone Temple Pilots and LinkinPark from 2013 to 2015. The partnership was ended amicably, precisely because the dates became impossible to reconcile.
In addition to touring twice, he recorded with STP an EP titled High Rise(2013). Before that, in 2002, Bennington had already collaborated with the group on the live single “Wonderful”from the album The Family Values Tour 2001which also brought together performances from LinkinPark, Static-X, Stain and Deadsy.
