Organized by the Orquestra Malassombro, a surprising new initiative will invade the schools of the city of Recife. With the interest of promoting local culture and capitalizing on the interest in frevo, the musical collective will continue the project”Malassombro Orchestra – Class concert for children: On the trail of the Recife Infestations“, a series of presentations adapting stories written by the sociologist Gilbert Freyre about the legends of the city.
Those responsible for adapting the sociologist’s texts, as well as directing the show, come from here Quiercles Santana. The orchestra began its visits to the city this Monday (21st), and will continue until next Friday (25th).
The objective proposed to the Malassombro Orchestra with this project was to stimulate the city’s young people to create a closer bond with the works of the Pernambuco author. Through the creative and performative rhythm of the frevo, the orchestra combines Freyre’s haunting narratives with the magic of performances for a relaxed and enjoyable time.
Among the legends covered in the project are the Cabriola Goat, the bogeyman of Recife who eats naughty children; Chora Menino Square, a place where a child can be heard crying at night; and the white figures appearing under the jackfruit trees on Malaquias Avenue. All these, and other legends, were taken directly from the work “Ghosts of ancient Recife“, one of Freyre’s most famous works.
The project is carried out by the musicians of Malassombro, a name that derives from the first headquarters of the Malassombro Orchestra, Venda do Bom Jesus, a place decorated with arts representing the stories collected by Gilberto Freyre. Additionally, the presentations will have Libra interpreters.
The orchestra will visit the Escola do Pilar (Centro), the Escola Draomiro Chaves Aguiar (Casa Amarela), the Escola Alto da Guabiraba, the Escola da Mangabeira and the Escola Cidadão Herbert de Souza (Santo Amaro). The show is composed largely of the orchestra’s original compositions, with the exception of “Vassourinhas”, a classical composition by Frevo from Pernambuco.
The Malassombro Orchestra brings culture into teaching
On the motivation of the project, Raffaele Meiradirector and arranger of the orchestra, commented to Fica Sabendo PE that “Our proposal is also to take a photograph of our time, a surprising feature of frevo debloco. And involving young people is important in this process”.
The orchestra’s thinking arises from a series of long-standing requests from artists, teachers and sociologists who say that promoting access to culture from childhood is essential for artistic creation.
The project is carried out with the support of the SIC – Sistema de Incentivo a Cultura, the Fundação de Cultura da Cidade do Recife, the Secretariat of Culture and the Municipality of Recife, and is supported by studies that attest to the benefit of music for learning childish.
