Guitarist admitted that he used to lose excitement about new work quickly due to personal issues

Even great artists suffer from insecurity. One of them is Brian Mayguitarist of queen. To help him overcome the problem, the musician had the help of his partner Freddie Mercurythe band’s eternal lead singer.

In conversation with the Guitar World, May shared some reflections on the topic. The 77-year-old guitarist revealed, initially, that he was always excited when starting something new. However, insecurity soon appears in his path.

He said:

With me, it always starts with a burst of activity, belief (in the project) and inspiration. I think: ‘oh, this is going to change the world’. And usually, this is accompanied by a period of total insecurity, where I think: ‘oh no, this is rubbish, it’s never going to work, my band is going to hate this’.”

Until today Brian He suffers a little from insecurity. Especially when presenting new work to the world.

The artist comments:

I think this is common with a lot of people — that moment when you lunge at the people around you, look at their faces, and feel very insecure in the moment. When I sing to someone, it’s something that always gets on my nerves, no matter who it is. If the person has never heard the song before, I feel very insecure. You just need to get over it.”

Friend support

Finally, Brian May revealed the support he has always had Freddie Mercury to overcome these insecurities. The guitarist stated:

Freddie was always amazing. I used to sing some things for him and he was always very encouraging. Of course, I usually composed for him. I was conscious of composing something that worked for him and not just for me. And usually, he got hold of it quickly. In many cases, I said, ‘Yes, yes, yes, I can do this. Give me a chance, put me there and I’ll do it.’ Freddie was always very outspoken, he had an incredible amount of motivation, optimism and energy. He helped me a lot with my insecurities and kind of chose me as his guitarist in the early days.”

The song that reminds Brian May of Freddie Mercury

In another interview, now with Vulture (via website Igor Miranda), Brian May mentioned the music of queen responsible for always making him remember Freddie Mercury. And it’s not about any of the band’s biggest hits: the chosen one is “The Miracle”title track from the 1989 album.

The guitarist justified the choice:

I love this song because it is very delicate and full of hope and light. When Freddie composed it, he must have known that the future wouldn’t be so good for him. I think he imagined what could happen. It’s just beautiful and very innocent. He talks about the inventions in the world with admiration. This neatly excludes all the evil in the world and all the terrible things that were happening to him and his friends. I just love it.”

Freddie Mercury died on November 24, 1991, aged 45. The cause was bronchopneumonia, aggravated by the HIV virus. The death occurred one day after the artist publicly acknowledged the illness.
