With the same name as Queen, the band’s first album was not designed the way the members originally wanted, according to Brian May
Legendary guitarist queen, Brian May made a very important decision: to reformulate all the guitar parts in the re-release of the band’s self-titled first studio album, released last Friday, the 25th.
It’s worth remembering how the album in question was released in 1973. The new version, mixed, mastered and expanded, has a selection of alternative takes, demos and rare live tracks, with the aim of “sounding the way the band always wanted.”
In an interview with MOJO, May revealed how he reworked every guitar part on the record to give fans “the debut album we always dreamed of bringing you.” In fact, the guitarist explained how he doesn’t think the original version was bad, but understands that it wasn’t what the group wanted at the time of recording.
Freddie [Mercury] and John [Deacon] You’ve also always been aware of this thing in our past that couldn’t seem to be fixed.
“Every instrument was re-examined from the bottom up,” he said. “The guitars were originally recorded very dry, so we corrected that.” Then, Brian May recalled some criticism he received from his own father about the sound of his debut album queen.
“I remember my father saying, ‘There’s no environment, Brian. I don’t feel like I’m in the room with you playing next to me,'” he said. “But we weren’t in a position to lay down the law and we felt if we got out of line we would lose the opportunity completely.”
Roy Thomas Baker [produtor] did an excellent job under the circumstances, but he was stuck between us young hopefuls and this management company [Trident Audio Productions]who saw us as a can of beans.
Finally, May opined how Queen II (1974) also deserves a re-release on the same level: “There are a lot of layers to that record and there wasn’t really the technology to make it heard. I think we’ll stop there, though. [terceiro álbum] Sheer Heart Attack [de 1974]we had everything under our fingers.”
