Charli XCX: ‘Brat’ is named word of the year by Collins dictionary

The expression became popular after the release of Charli XCX’s album in June this year.

The Collins Dictionary has decided: “brat” is the word of the year! In addition to having won the position, the expression names the sixth studio album by Charli XCX and, therefore, it was popularized in 2024.

To the NMEthe British singer defined “brat” as someone “kind of mean, gossipy and hardcore”. Shortly after the release of the album, in June this year, Charlie stated that the candidate for president of the United States Kamala Harris “it’s brat”.

The Democrat’s team soon adopted the album’s aesthetic on social media, boosting the use of the word.

Before naming “brat” as word of the year, the dictionary defined it as “someone, especially a child” who “misbehaves and gets on your nerves.” Now, however, the expression means, according to Collins, a person “characterized by a confident, independent and hedonistic attitude”.
