According to the Collins dictionary, the term channels self-acceptance and rebellion, in tune with 2024
THE Collins Dictionary announced on Friday the 1st that the word of the year is “brat”. The term, which in free translation means “brat”, was used by the singer Charli XCX in his latest album and used in election campaigns in Brazil and the United States.
The dictionary defined “brat” as something “characterized by a confident, independent and hedonistic attitude.” “More than a hugely successful album, ‘brat’ is a cultural phenomenon that has resonated with people around the world, and ‘brat summer’ has established itself as an aesthetic and a lifestyle,” he explains in a note on choice.
Other terms competing for word of the year were “delulu” (characterizing someone with unrealistic ideas and expectations), “romantasia” (a literary genre combining romance and fantasy), and “yapping” (a term characterizing the word of the year). act of talking a lot without thinking about the consequences).
No one, however, has surpassed “brat”: “Channeling self-acceptance and rebellion, it is a fitting word for 2024, a year in which hedonism and anxiety have combined to form a heady mix,” the note also reads.
After all, what is “brat”?
The term was chosen by Charli XCX for her sixth studio album, released in June. The album cover popularized the word: the singer opted for a simple aesthetic, with a neon green background and the word written in Arial.
The idea was to provoke the music industry. According to a publication by the artist herself, the choice was made because “the constant demand for access to women’s bodies and faces on album covers is misogynistic and boring”.
