Bobby Gillespie’s (Primal Scream) harsh critique of current rock

Iconic Scottish vocalist says musical style has become “a business, a Walt Disney dream world”

Seminal alternative rock band, the Primal Scream emerged in the 1980s and released his most popular works in the following decade. A very different scenario from the current one, which was harshly criticized by Bobby Gillespie.

In an interview with AnOther (via Guitar.com), the Scottish vocalist declared that he believes that contemporary rock does not contain any element of rebellion. In his view, the musical style became a “business”, comparing it to a history of Disney.

Directly, he states:

There is no more rebellion in rock. It’s a business, a dream world of Walt Disney. Just another part of the entertainment industrial complex.”

This does not mean, however, that everything is disposable or lost. The singer states that there are still artists capable of challenging this situation.

There are still some good people fighting the idiots out there.”

On the other hand, when asked to mention a name that made you excited to watch recently, Gillespie highlighted the veteran Chrissie Hynde73 years old. The vocalist and guitarist of Pretenders was described as “a punk street singer”.

The spirit of rock and roll according to Bobby Gillespie

At another point in the conversation, Bobby Gillespie was asked to reflect on what the spirit of rock and roll means to him. In response, the member of the Primal Scream mentioned the chaotic tour of Sex Pistols by the United States in 1978, responsible for putting an end to the band.

Sid Vicious (bassist) on stage in Texas with a bloody nose and ‘gimme a fix’ (‘give me a fix’, in reference to drugs) written on his chest, swinging his bass in the face of a guy who was teasing him while shouting: ‘everyone cowboys are b*tch!’. You don’t see that anymore.”
