Pharrell Williams denies hint to Taylor Swift about supporting Kamala Harris

The artist stated a few months ago that he doesn’t like ‘celebrities trying to tell you who to vote for’

Pharrell Williams denied that he had sent an indirect message to Taylor Swift when he was asked about politics during an interview with HollywoodReporter held in September this year. At the time, the artist criticized celebrities who support candidates — without mentioning names — and did not take a position.

In an interview with the magazine GQ published this Wednesday, 13, Williams clarified the statement. When the interviewer returned to the topic, stating that the speech generated headlines saying that “it was a hint to Taylor“, he argued, “Because that’s what they do: they turn us against each other. I love the Taylor. She knows that.”

“I actually bought a T-shirt from Taylorfrom 1989online last year and walked around with it tucked into my jeans. I love her. I love people, man. That was far-right troll stuff,” he added.

According to Varietypublication in HollywoodReporter was released in print on September 12th — one day after Swift declare support for Kamala Harris in the United States presidential election. Therefore, it is unlikely that Williams was making reference to the singer when he talked about politics.

At the time, the producer pointed out: “I don’t do politics. In fact, I get irritated sometimes when I see celebrities trying to tell you [em quem votar]. […] When people start acting authoritarian, rolling up their sleeves and stuff, and going around with a sign — shut up!”

Shortly afterwards, Williams seems to maintain his opinion on politics. THE GQhe reflected: “I heard something the other day that made all the sense in the world: right, left, it’s all cut from the same cloth.”
