The moment Serj Tankian emotionally disconnected from System of a Down

The singer says he has become a “very passive” person within the band when it comes to offering creative contributions

The breaking of system of a Down in 2006 it still arouses curiosity among the public. Even with the 2010 reunion it can be said that the band was no longer the same: the classic lineup was maintained, however the return did not generate a new album, only charity singles. “Protect the Earth” AND “Genocidal Humanoidz” in 2020.

One of the keys to understanding relational tension is Serj Tankian. The singer began to have creative differences with the guitarist Daron Malakianespecially during the album recording process Hypnotize AND Hypnotizeboth from 2005. Now, the singer reveals that he “disconnected emotionally” from the group during this period.

In an interview with Metal Hammer, Tankian initially says:

“I’ve had a really unique relationship with the last few records (Hypnotize AND Hypnotize) because, in a way, I was emotionally disconnected from the band while making them.”

Then Serj explains that the creative dispute in the band turned him into a “very passive” person. He explains:

“There were songs that I wanted to take with me and I felt like I couldn’t. I was in a weird place. I contributed creatively, but I didn’t… I don’t know. I needed to breathe. I felt like there were too many things going on.”

Records appreciated, despite regrets

However, this does not mean this Serj Tankian he doesn’t like it Hypnotize AND Hypnotize. The albums responsible for bringing songs like “BYOB”, “Request!” AND “Lonely Day” they are appreciated by the singer, even if with personal reservations.

“I still think those songs are great. But when I think about it, I also remember that it was a strange time in my life – and that’s something I have to be aware of too.”

In other interviews, Tankian he made it clear that from the beginning he knew how to do it system of a Down would have problems. On WSOU 89.5 FM radio (via Igor Miranda’s website), for example, he commented that the creative self-sufficiency of Daron Malakiangrown as a songwriter of his own songs, it could lead to a breakup.

The guitarist’s dedication could also be an obstacle, oddly enough. The frontman explains:

“While John (Dolmayan) has been playing the drums since he was eight years old, he has done many things in his life, such as owning a comic book company. shavo (Odadjianbassist) did other things too, although music was an important part of his life. But for Daronit was the only activity. I have also done many things in life. I worked in different fields, I graduated and got into music later than all the other kids.”

System of a Down currently

The fact is that the activities of the system of a Down have been increasingly reduced in recent years. Few shows take place and, when they do occur, they are sporadic, at festivals or large events, without any connection to the tours. In this regard, Serj Tankian works on a solo career, after releasing the EP Foundations in September and a new autobiography, Down with the systemavailable in Brazil from Buzz Publisher.
