Administrative error resulted in the Pink Floyd guitarist’s house, measuring more than 580 square meters, being transferred to the British Crown

David Gilmour is going through a real estate turmoil that is so rare that it is considered unique. The guitarist and vocalist of Pink Floyd tried to sell a mansion worth 10 million pounds (around R$73 million at current prices and in a direct transaction), but discovered midway through the process that he did not have legal permission to do so: his property is, in fact, owned by the British Crown.

According to the MailOnlinethe 78-year-old musician and his wife, the writer Polly Samsonseek to pass on the six-bedroom property in Hove, England. Formerly a dilapidated Turkish bath, the property called Medina House was acquired by the former company Gilmour, Hoveco Ltdin 2011.

The company was dissolved three years later, in 2014. However, by mistake, the company’s assets were not transferred to David. Perhaps he believed the process would be automatic, but that was not the case.

This is where British legislation comes in: the non-transferred assets of a dissolved company become “bono vacantia” (“vacant assets”) and are passed on to the Crown. Initially, the property was in possession of the Queen Elizabethbut as she passed away, now she has the King Charles.

The administrative error led Gilmour to appeal to the High Court of London, requesting a court order transferring the mansion into his name for the purpose of selling it. It is a very rare situation, as assessed by experts interviewed by the media outlet.

Medina House is over 580 square meters. It includes six bedrooms, four bathrooms and four living rooms spread over three floors, as well as a patio, covered garden, wine cellar, gym and library.

It’s not the first time that David Gilmour have problems linked to the property in question. Upon acquiring it, the guitarist planned a renovation to transform the space into a house, but the work generated protests from neighbors because it would compromise the natural lighting of other houses. The situation was resolved in 2017 and the property ended up demolished the following year, to create the mansion we have today.

This is not the main residence of Gilmour and Samson. The couple actually live on a farm in Wisborough Green, West Sussex.
