“Hunger Strike”, recorded by members of the group together with the late Soudngarden singer, was left out of the repertoire for a decade
The 2024 leg of the tour Dark Matterin which the Pearl Jam promotes his new album of the same title, which came to an end last Saturday (23). The final performance was held at the ENGIE Stadium, in Sydney, Australia.
As usual, the group performed a long repertoire, totaling 27 songs and a two and a half hour show. Amidst surprises like “Dissident” (performed for the first time on the tour) and a version of “No Surrender” dedicated to the author himself Bruce Springsteenthe vocalist Eddie Vedder and company decided to play “Hunger Strike”the side project’s most popular song Temple of the Dogfor the first time since 2014.
Founded in the early 1990s, Temple of the Dog was created by Chris Cornelllate vocalist of Soundgardenas a way of honoring the friend Andrew Woodsinger of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone passed away in March 1990. For the occasion, he brought his own drummer, Matt Cameron (who would join Pearl Jam in 1998), and several of Pearl Jam’s friends: Vedder, the guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready and the bassist Jeff Ament. It is worth noting that Gossard and Ament played with Wood in Mother Love Bone.
The initiative resulted in an eponymous album in 1991, released even before Pearl Jam released its debut album, ten. Over the years, Vedder and his partners have played “Hunger Strike” at shows with some frequency, but the decade-long absence may also have been motivated by Cornell’s death in 2017. The performance of the song in Sydney was the first since the loss.
