With the album ready, Spiritbox celebrates a special show with Bring Me the Horizon in Brazil [ENTREVISTA]

Singer Courtney LaPlante praises her bandmates, promises a longer set in Sao Paulo and comments on the next album

The special show bring me The Horizon at Allianz Parque, in Sao Paulo, this Saturday (30th), it is also a sort of mini festival. In addition to the English band, who will headline a stadium for the first time, they will also be there Motionless in white, Spiritbox AND The plot in you.

They are quality names in the metalcore field – even if it is simplistic to label them all the same -, but Spiritbox is a case apart. It is by far the youngest band: it was founded in Canada in 2016 and publicly announced the following year. They were no newcomers, however, being the singer Courtney LaPlante and the guitarist Mike Stringermarried, they had been together in another group in previous years: i I’ve struggled with fir once before.

From that moment on everything started to happen rather quickly for the duo, today accompanied by Zev Rosenberg on the battery e Josh Gilbert in conclusion. His singles have racked up millions of plays on Spotify and YouTube. They have toured or shared the stage with Korn, Limp Bizkit, Ghost, Under oath and Bring Me the Horizon itself. His first album, Eternal blue (2021), reached significant positions in the charts of several countries, such as the United States (13th), Canada (17th), Australia (8th) and the United Kingdom (19th).

Despite this, on the eve of his first concert in a stadium in Brazil and on the eve of the release of his second album, the long-awaited Tsunami Seawhich releases March 7, 2025 via Climb/Pale chordwith distribution in Brazil via BMG –, the feeling is that only now is there a certain stability. In an interview with Rolling Stone BrazilLaPlante stated that he is very excited to perform here, as the national audience is known for its interactivity and passion for music, but confessed:

“I don’t want to have high expectations that people watching actually know my band, because they’re there to see Bring Me the Horizon. […] It’s all new. Every time I go somewhere, it’s for the first time. In the back of your mind you always think, “What if no one shows up?” […] Either way, it’s going to be great, because I love all the Bring Me the Horizon, Motionless in White and The Plot in You fans.”

Even if no one shows up, which they definitely won’t, Spiritbox will be able to enjoy a longer than usual time for their show. LaPlante says he’s usually scheduled to open for the band’s tours, so there’s usually a 30-minute set. In Brazil it will last an hour, so they can debut the new song on stage “Perfect Soul” and even resume it seems “Blessed be he”usually cut because it is longer.

The merits of colleagues

The other three names in the lineup were praised by Courtney LaPlante, who, apparently, is also a fan. The singer emphasized that The Plot in You is “very underrated”as it influenced “many modern metal bands don’t get credit”. Motionless in White was mentioned as a group “incredible” and owner “the best live sound” of the segment.

As for Bring Me the Horizon, the story extends even further, as Spiritbox have only recently been able to tour with their English colleagues. She says:

“It was amazing playing with them last summer, seeing them behind the scenes. It really confirms us, because sometimes my teammates and I feel like we are too critical and perfectionistic about our work. But then we played with them and I understood that we’re not crazy, we just want to do our best, because they also want every detail to be perfect. I saw them watching a video of their show in front of a big arena in Paris and saying: ‘that’s not good enough.’ .And then they changed the day of the show, because they knew they could do better knowing that I’m not hypercorrect and that a tyrant validates me as an artist.

LaPlante even points out that the credit for holding a stadium show belongs entirely to Bring Me the Horizon — and that he’s happy just to participate, without feeling that the event’s success is something collective or even a “victory” for metalcore as a musical group. All. She states:

“They’ve been a band for more than 20 years, I think. And they’ve worked harder than any other band. They’ve influenced our genre more than any other modern band. And they’re so creative that they don’t compromise their sound: they change and they do what you want. This band deserves it and I don’t see my contribution. They were headlining at Download Festival (in England in 2023) and it was such a statement for a younger band to do that that makes me think: Maybe one day I can be like them.”

New album and Grammy

Previously mentioned, Tsunami Sea will be released on March 7th and the public has already had access to two singles: “Soft Thorn” AND “Perfect Soul”. If it were up to Courtney LaPlante, the album would be out next week. While this doesn’t happen, celebrate the sense of continuity of the new work in relation to Eternal blue and the EP The fear of fear (2023), most recent release so far.

“Even if we don’t promote it that way, all our works are conceptual and connect to each other. Always building on what I’ve done before. […] Tsunami Sea is the sequel to The Fear of Fear, but we also think of it as the sister to Eternal Blue. It’s very different from Eternal Blue, but they’re both an important part of my identity.”

As compared to Eternal blue, Tsunami Sea it was also the first time the band managed to record an album treating the music as the only work. The singer admits that, until the first album, they had to divide their time with conventional jobs and record on weekends. Being able to dedicate themselves exclusively to art gave them more confidence.

“Now we are people who have the privilege of doing this as our real job. We take it very seriously. It’s not a casual thing. It’s like, ‘What could it be like now?’ Since we are living our dreams and we can dedicate every minute of our lives to creating music.”

While Tsunami Sea it doesn’t come out, The fear of fear continues to bear fruit. For the second time a song from the EP was nominated Grandmother From Better metal performance. In the 2024 edition, “Challenged” entered the dispute, but the trophy went to “72 Seasons”from Metallica. Now, “Cellar Door” competes against “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!)” (Gojira with Marina Viotti AND Victor Le Manse), “Crown of Horns” (Judas Priest), “Screaming Suicide” (Metallica) AND “Suffocate” (Lost with Poppy).

LaPlante is surprised by this recognition, but it goes further. He points out that it’s rare to have more than one young band competing for this award, but at the 2025 event it will be them and Knocked Loose in collaboration with Poppy. In addition to this, three of the five candidates involve women, since in addition to Courtney with Spiritbox and Poppy in the aforementioned partnership, there is the presence of the opera singer Marina Viotti in the recording with Gojira, who presented the opening of the Paris Olympic Games.

“No woman has won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance since it was created in 1989. There was a year when Lzzy Hale and the Stormy storm he won, but it was around this time that he was called Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance (in 2013). There is now more chance than ever for a woman to win.”
