The original vocalist of Alice in Chains, Layne Staley, passed away 20 years ago, unfortunately, his death was not a big surprise to those who knew him or followed his career. Even at the height of the career of the influential Seattle hard rock band, Staley didn’t hide his flirtations with heroin, and completely dropped off the radar after the band’s brief reunion in 1998 to record a couple of songs for the Music Bank box set.

But while it is impossible to totally separate man’s art from his vice, the fact remains that Staley was an extremely talented and charismatic singer whose intense performances are still capable of raising the hairs on the back of his neck more than two decades after the fact. So instead of dwelling on the unfortunate circumstances of his death, let’s enjoy these 10 incredible live highlights from his amazing but all-too-short-lived career.
